The Junior League of San Antonio has over 1,400 members. Approximately 400 are classified as Active Members currently participating in community projects and fundraising efforts. Approximately 100 Provisional Members spend a year training to be effective volunteers and valuable members of the Junior League of San Antonio. Over 00 of these women are Sustaining members who have given many years of service to the Junior League of San Antonio. Sustaining members no longer must complete placement and fundraising requirements but continue to provide moral, financial and informational support to the Active and Provisional members of the league. Many of these women continue their commitment to community service in the San Antonio community and across the country.
The Junior League of San Antonio supports over 35 other non-profit agencies annually by offering volunteers and necessary funding. Our "San Antonio Works" projects provide a volunteer force of over 200 women that assist agencies such as the Children's Shelter, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, St. Peter's/St. Joseph's Children's Home, Ronald McDonald House, The Guadalupe Cultural Center, SAMM Shelter, and the San Antonio Food Bank with short-term (done-in-a-day) projects. The Junior League of San Antonio also works with children and families through Prevent Blindness, the Ferarri Community Learning Center, Roy Maas' Youth Alternatives and the Hawthorne Elementary providing educational and enrichment activities for children. Other community projects include reaching out to residents in local nursing homes, sponsoring the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, Reach Out and Read (ROAR) and creating LITERACY San Antonio, a coalition to improve literacy rates in South Texas, visit www.literacysanantonio.com for more information.
The Junior League of San Antonio's oldest fundraiser and community service project, the Rummage Sale, was revamped in 2008. For 84 years, this sale was a training ground for volunteers, raised substantial funds for Junior League of San Antonio community programs, and provided a necessary service to the community by offering affordable clothing and other necessities for San Antonio families. JLSA partnered with Goodwill in 2008 to create a new Rummage Sale Event. Members continue to donate their gently used goods, but are now able to drop them at any Goodwill Donation station. The sale day is held the last Saturday in February each year. In the first year, Goodwill and JLSA provided $20,000 in shopping vouchers to selected JLSA Community Partners to shop the sale. In addition, the JLSA Rummage experience is now available year round through "Julia's Attic" (An homage to JLSA) a boutique shopping area within 4 different Goodwill stores. For 15 years, the Junior League of San Antonio's Olé Marketplace fundraiser has provided a unique shopping opportunity that has resulted in thousands of dollars flowing back into our community. This fundraiser also provides training opportunities for our volunteers and provides the funding for the Junior League of San Antonio's signature project. Over the years, Junior League of San Antonio members have contributed thousands of hours of volunteer service to the community every year. Through this contribution of time and talent members truly make a difference in San Antonio.
